Childrens Party for the Embera Tribe

Today I was lucky enough to be asked to photograph a children's party for the Embera Tribe. It was being held in conjunction with Kids Zone and Gatun Lake Tours, who had donated toys for the children and food for the party. The Embera Tribe live in the Chagres National Park in a protected area that was allocated to them 10 years ago. Previously they lived in small family groups in the jungle and were hunter gatherers. Now their main income is from tourism, and the sale of tribal crafts.

The  thirty children in the tribe were treated to an afternoon of games, face painting, a clown and even a pinata. They all appeared to be having a great time and older members of the tribe gathered round to watch the fun. The tribe were in traditional dress, but I did glimpse some teenagers in shorts and t-shirt, so I think perhaps it was for our benefit on this day!! However it was great to be part of such an event and have the opportunity to meet with the tribe.
